Cassie Bernall

Cassie René Bernall

November 6, 1981-April 20, 1999

Cassie, nicknamed "Bunny Rabbit" by her parents, loved cats, photography, art, backpacking, rock climbing, camping, and snowboarding. Her favorite band was The Cranberries and her favorite colors were yellow and blue.

Cassie was the inspiration behind the book titled She Said Yes, written by her parents. Although it inspired Christians everywhere, the story of a girl being shot to death for acknowledging her faith in Christ turned out to be false.

How she died

Cassie was in the library studying when the shooting began. She ended up underneath table #19 and was shot in the head with a shotgun by Eric Harris after he slapped the table and said, "peekaboo!"

Contrary to early stories, Cassie was not asked if she believe in God and was not shot for saying, "yes." This story came from Craig Scott, who was in the library on the opposite side of the room and heard the conversation. However, he based his identity of the individual on recognizing her voice. He was mistaken.  The girl asked about her belief in God was Valeen Schnurr. She had already been shot multiple times when Dylan asked if she believed in God. After saying yes, the shooter (Dylan Klebold) asked, "what for?" and then walked away. Nobody was shot for affirming their belief in God that day.

Life details

Passionate about England, and having just visited Great Britain, Cassie's dream was to attend Cambridge University to become an obstetrician. She loved Chinese food, pizza, and cheesecake. Of course, her favorite restaurant was the Cheesecake Factory. Her favorite actor was Leonardo DiCaprio and her favorite movies were The Titanic and Braveheart.

At one point, Cassie got into witchcraft and her parents found journal entries with drawings describing and depicting how she would murder them. They consulted a pastor who recommended they quit their jobs, pull her out of school, isolate her in her room, and send her to church. Her parents did all of that and even physically cut the phone cords so Cassie had no ability to contact anyone.

Cassie went to the city center with her parents to help drug and alcohol addicts and shortly before her death, she had accepted Jesus.

Cassie Bernall's Funeral

Cassie's funeral was held on April 26, 1999 right after a tribute at the West Bowles Community Church. She is buried in Golden Cemetery in Golden, Colorado.

Autopsy Information

Corey DePooter

Corey Tyler Depooter

March 3, 1981-April 20, 1999

Corey was a fun guy who loved to fish and spend time outdoors. He taught his sister fly fishing and he would regularly fish with his best friend, Austin Eubanks, whom he also taught fly fishing. To return the favor, Austin taught Corey bass fishing. Austin was originally from Oklahoma and he and Corey had just taken a fishing trip to Oklahoma before the shooting, staying with Austin's family. The trip got off to a bad start when Corey locked his keys in his truck the night before a snowstorm hit, but they made it safely to their destination and had a great time. During this trip, Corey caught a 7-pound bass, which was the biggest fish he had ever caught.

How he died

Corey was under table #14 with Austin in the library when he died. Austin was injured and survived, but went on to develop an opiate addiction and later died of an overdose in 2019.

Life details

Corey loved to play golf and worked at a local golf course part-time. He was working to save money to buy a fishing boat. Standing six feet tall, he was one of the bigger guys on the Columbine High School wrestling team, but quit after his sophomore year to focus on schoolwork.

He was committed to academics, and after getting his wisdom teeth removed in 1999, he was worried about missing school. Corey dreamed of going to college to get a degree in engineering and wanted to buy a Mustang.

Corey's hobbies included hunting, skateboarding, aggressive inline rollerblading, parasailing, hiking, and he was also on the school's Cross Country team with Daniel Mauser (deceased). He dreamed of having three kids and loved dancing. He had a good sense of humor, and once dressed up as Josephine Bonaparte for a skit.

After college, Corey planned to join the U.S. Marines, as his family has a strong history of military service throughout several branches.

Corey DePooter's Funeral

Corey's funeral was held at Trinity Christian Center, where 20 U.S. Marines attended thanks to his grandmother, Fern Hamilton, who called to request their presence. His golf shoes were displayed during his memorial service.

On May 3, 2000, Corey was named an honorary Marine during a ceremony performed by Air Control Squadron 23 (now defunct) at his gravesite at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Littleton, Colorado. During the ceremony, Sgt. Ricardo Davila said, “Sometimes people don't get the chance to do the things they want to do in life. This gives Corey that chance." Corey's hunting buddy Brian Saltzman said, "Corey would have made an excellent Marine and would have been a fine officer."

Daniel Mauser

Daniel Conner Mauser

June 25, 1983-April 20, 1999

Daniel was a straight-A student who loved school and was in a gifted program in junior high. He was shy, gentle, affectionate, and was known to hug his parents often. He and his father played foosball often, and in March 1999, Daniel went to France for two weeks with his French class. He was on the Cross Country team and in an attempt to conquer his shyness, he joined the debate team. At one point, a teammate named Peter called him "Moose" and Daniel got annoyed, put his hands on his hips, and told Peter to "shut up." While visiting Yellowstone, another teammate picked up a figurine of a moose with its hooves on its hips looking annoyed and gave it to Daniel's friend Lindsey and it became a cherished memento.

How he died

Daniel was in the library under table #9 when he was shot and killed.

Life details

Daniel was the top biology student at Columbine and won the "Stretch for Excellence" award, but he didn't know he had been selected. He was in the library under table #9 when he was shot and killed.

His favorite foods were pepperoni and sausage pizza, salmon, steak, BBQ chicken, pancakes, and the whole wheat waffles his dad made. Daniel loved to play video games, including Star Wars Rebellion, StarCraft, Theme Hospital, Goldeneye, and Ken Griffey Baseball.

Daniel's favorite television shows included Siskel and Ebert, The Simpsons, The X-Files, 60 Minutes, and The Tonight Show.

He was well-traveled for his age, having visited Washington D.C., Universal Studios in Los Angeles, Disneyland, Disneyworld, Yellowstone, Niagara Falls, Devil's Tower, Mt. Rushmore, Badlands, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Utah, Maine, Boston, and New York City. In Sarasota, he was bitten by a stingray while swimming in the ocean.

Daniel loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time at local Colorado parks. He loved to play miniature golf, go skiing, and swim in the hot springs.

A couple of weeks before his death he asked his father if there were loopholes in the Brady Bill that was put in place to require background checks for certain gun sales. Although not technically a "loophole," the long guns used in the attack were purchased legally since private sales were not part of the Brady Bill. After Daniel's death, his father, Tom Mauser, fought tirelessly to tighten gun laws and in 2000, he convinced lawmakers to pass a law requiring background checks for private gun sales.

Daniel played the piano, was described as "intense" but sweet, and his father was looking forward to climbing a 14,000-foot mountain with him before he died.

Like other Columbine students, Daniel volunteered at Swedish Hospital for a couple of summers and was interested in a medical career. He is remembered as being a bit on the serious side, but his friends loved him regardless.

Daniel Mauser's Funeral

Daniel's funeral was held on April 25, 1999 at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church along with Kelly Fleming. He is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

Autopsy Information

Daniel Mauser was autopsied at the Jefferson County Coroner's Office in Golden, CO located at 800 Jefferson County Pkwy #1000, Golden, CO 80401. We don't have a time or date for his autopsy, but on the diagram it looks like it might say 0:30 a.m. He was autopsied by Ben Galloway and possibly Rob Kulbacki, but we don't have his full autopsy to get that information.

"My Moose" - a memorial created by a friend
Daniel Rohrbough

Daniel Lee Rohrbough

March 2, 1984-April 20, 1999

Daniel was a sweet kid who was into electronics and computer games, and was looking forward to getting his driver's license. He helped his father run his stereo equipment store every day after school and was described as a fun guy. Since the age of 3, he had been helping his grandfather harvest wheat from his farm and used the money he earned to buy presents for other people.

Daniel's mother said, “If you were upset about something, he would sit down and put his arm around you and rub your back.”

How he died

After leaving the cafeteria with friends Lance Kirklin and Sean Graves, they were all headed up the stairs when shots were fired at them from the top of the hill. He and his friends ran back, but were shot. Kirklin and Graves survived, but Daniel died on the sidewalk. His family found out he died when a newspaper published an aerial photo of his body lying on the sidewalk.

Daniel Rohrbough's Funeral

Daniel's funeral was held at Grace Presbyterian Church and he is buried in Littleton Cemetery in Littleton, Colorado.

Dave Sanders

William David Sanders

October 22, 1951-April 20, 1999

William Dave Sanders was a business and computer teacher at Columbine who was one of the first teachers hired in 1974 not long after the school opened. He was the assistant  girls' softball coach and head girls' basketball coach at Columbine High School and was loved by his students. As one of Columbine's most beloved teachers, the school's softball field renovated and named after him (The Dave Sanders Memorial Softball Field). In February 2000, he was awarded the prestigious ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian sports award.

How he died

Dave Sanders was shot twice and then helped into a science classroom where he lay bleeding for hours. His wounds would have been survivable if he had gotten immediate help, but attempts to rescue him were thwarted. One entrance that led directly to him was blocked and first responders were told they would be shot if they went inside the building against orders.

Dave was alive by the time Denver Health paramedic Troy Laman got to him hours later, but they determined it was too late to save him. They moved his body to a storage room where he died.

When the shooting began, Dave was in the faculty lounge with a few other teachers when they heard what sounded like students banging on the window. Another teacher went to look outside and came back to tell him that a student (Sean Graves) had been shot outside of the cafeteria. Dave stepped outside briefly to check on Sean and see what was going on, and with the help of a couple other faculty members, dragged Sean halfway into the cafeteria doorway.

Dave then ran around the cafeteria telling everyone to get down. The official story is that he immediately ran up the stairs where he was shot twice, fell in the hallway, and was helped to a nearby science classroom where he later died. However, witness accounts tell a different story.

Dave's movements according to witnesses

Dave made two trips up the stairs, not one, and he did not sustain both gunshots upstairs. He was most likely shot through the right upper back either while stepping outside or while in the cafeteria. After running upstairs the first time, yelling at students to get upstairs, he ushered a student through the upper main East entrance. That student turned back and saw him leaning against a wall out of breath with bloody hands, but he was not bleeding from his mouth at this time.

Dave then realized the shooters were in the hallway and ushered students downstairs by yelling at them to go down into the cafeteria. He followed the crowd down to the first landing, only to be pushed back up the stairs by the stampede of students running from shots being fired in the cafeteria. At this time, he was accompanied by a student named Alicia Encinias who ran with him up the stairs. It was at this time that Dave ran to his right and was shot a second time through the left base of his neck. This bullet exited his right upper lip, causing him to fall.

The angle of the second gunshot wound through his neck and mouth was angled upward and investigators concluded at the scene that he was shot from below. As Dave turned right at the top of the stairs, he was most likely shot by a shooter who was down in the cafeteria or on the stairs. Many students in the stampede reported being shot at while running up the stairs at that time. The location at the top of the stairs where Dave turned right was an open section that looked down over the cafeteria, so it makes perfect sense that he was shot from below.

Unanswered Questions

If Dave made two trips up the stairs, you might be wondering why the cafeteria security footage only shows him making one trip up the stairs. Either the footage we have has been staged or one trip up the stairs has been eliminated from the released footage.

Over the years, the cafeteria footage has been analyzed by several professionals who concluded it has been heavily doctored. There is also a large chunk of time missing from the footage (about 8 minutes from 11:14 a.m. - 11:22 a.m.) that would have shown key events.

According to witnesses, the missing timeframe begins exactly when Dave Sanders, Judy Greco, and Chris Redmerski realized something was wrong and ran over to the door where Sean Graves had been shot. These missing 8 minutes would have depicted the following key events:

  1. Harris and Klebold entering the cafeteria with an older male wearing a white v-neck shirt.
  2. Klebold walking over to the vending machines possibly to check on the bombs.
  3. Sanders pulling Graves into the doorway.
  4. Sanders running up the stairs long before 11:24 a.m.
  5. Sanders coming in and out of the cafeteria twice to usher students inside.
  6. Sanders coming into the cafeteria from the parking lot holding his injured right shoulder.
  7. A wave of students coming down the stairs literally being pushed down by Sanders from above.
  8. Shooters in trench coats standing near Rebel Corner

The reason for the missing 8 minutes has never been adequately explained. The official story is that during those 8 minutes, the custodian was changing the security VHS tape in the closet and it took him 8 minutes to rewind a new tape and put it in.

In one version of this story, the custodian received a phone call and disappeared for 8 minutes, came back, and changed the tape. However, according to witnesses with this custodian, and the custodian himself, he never received any phone call and never discussed having to rewind a tape. He said he changed the tape immediately and then heard Neil Gardner and Peter Horvath calling for help over the radio.

Gardner and Horvath were talking over the radio about the incident around 11:16 a.m., and at the time this conversation was taking place over the radio, the custodian says he had already changed the tape and was on his way to see if he could help.

The official timeline says this conversation over the radio took place at 11:22 a.m., which would match the time the tape resumes. However, witness accounts, including Horvath's own testimony, times this call closer to 11:16 a.m. The custodian who changed the tape said he changed the tape between 11:10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. and never mentions rewinding a tape or taking a phone call.

There's another problem with the "tape rewind" story. The official story is that when the tape stopped at 11:14 a.m., there were no duffel bags visible. Then, when the tape resumed at 11:22 a.m., suddenly two duffel bags became visible, which would be the cafeteria bombs. They concluded that Eric and Dylan timed planting the bombs based on knowing when the tape was going to be changed so as to avoid being caught on tape. However, they are seen on the tape at 10:58 a.m. - 11:01 a.m. planting the bombs. When you actually watch the tape, there are no duffel bags that magically appear that were not there prior to the tape resuming. That statement has been completely fabricated.

It appears that the story of the custodian changing the tape was just a cover story for the missing 8 minutes.

Dylan Klebold

Dylan Bennet Klebold

September 11, 1981-April 20, 1999

Dylan was a shy guy who loved computer games like Duke Nukem, Quake, and Doom, and he built his own computer with a Linux operating system. He was highly intelligent and by third grade, he was enrolled in the gifted program at Governor's Ranch Elementary school called C.H.I.P.S. (Challenging High Intellectual Potential Students). This program ended after sixth grade. While attending Columbine, Dylan enjoyed making home videos for his video production class and was heavily involved in theater productions managing the sound system.

Dylan felt awkward around his peers and didn't know how much he was loved by his friends and family. He felt isolated and alienated in the world, and longed for a love he didn't think he could have.

How he died

Dylan was one of the shooters at Columbine High School and he died of an alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound in the library next to Eric Harris.

Dylan Klebold's Funeral

Dylan's funeral was held at the church his family attended - St. Philip Lutheran church. The funeral service was private with only 13 people attending, and was officiated by reverend Don Marxhausen, who ended up leaving his position in August 2000. Marxhausen also officiated the funeral for basketball star Greg Barnes.

Dylan was cremated and has no known physical memorial location.

Autopsy Information

On 4/21/99, Dylan Klebold's body was taken directly to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office in Golden, CO located at 800 Jefferson County Pkwy #1000, Golden, CO 80401.

Eric Harris

Eric David Harris

April 9, 1981-April 20, 1999

Eric was an intelligent kid with a high GPA and a heavy interest in not just playing computer games, but making his own levels. He made a handful of levels for Doom and Quake, and played them with friends from Columbine and people he met on the internet. He was proud of his levels and published them on his website connected to his AOL screen name. His friends said he was funny and smart, but he could get intense when he was angry.

Eric was in the same video production class as Dylan, and they made home videos together with some of their friends and classmates.

Eric loved animals. He was always worried about his little yorkie named Sparky, who was prone to having seizures. He also liked cats, and they liked him, too. His friend, Alyssa Sechler, said that her cat really loved Eric and they had a little bond. Alyssa also said that Eric would always greet her with a big hug, although he lacked self-confidence and felt inferior to other guys.

Like his friend, Dylan, Eric struggled with depression and feelings of unworthiness, especially at school where the jocks would constantly make fun of him and treat him poorly.

How he died

Eric was one of the shooters at Columbine High School and he died of an alleged self-inflicted shotgun wound in the library next to Dylan Klebold.

Eric Harris' Funeral

Eric didn't have a funeral and if he had a private memorial service, those details have never been made public. According to the book Homegrown by Jeffrey Toobin, Eric was cremated and his ashes were stored in an evidence locker under the care of private investigator Ellis Armistead, who was hired by the Harris family.

According to Toobin, on June 11, 2001, Armistead placed the cremains of Timothy McVeigh into a locker next to the cremains of Eric Harris. It's been rumored that Eric's ashes are still stored in this locker, but the source of this information doesn't state or imply that his cremains are still there.

Autopsy Information

On 4/21/99, Eric Harris' body was taken directly to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office in Golden, CO located at 800 Jefferson County Pkwy #1000, Golden, CO 80401.

Isaiah Shoels

Isaiah Eamon Shoels

August 4, 1980-April 20, 1999

Isaiah's dream was to become a comedian and since he loved to play keyboard, he also wanted to be a music executive. His father was a record producer who owned two companies (Notorious Records est. 1989 and Ft. Knox Entertainment est. 1997) and music was in his blood. Isaiah planned to attend Denver Institute of the Arts after graduation.

There was a lot of racial hatred toward black people at Columbine, and members of the Trench Coat Mafia were known to harass and intimidate Isaiah for his race. Isaiah used to tell his father, "Man, I can't wait until I get out of that crazy school," but his father didn't realize how bad it actually was for his son.

How he died

Isaiah was in the library under table #16 with friends Matt Kechter (deceased) and Craig Scott when he was shot and killed.

Life details

Suffering from a congenital heart condition, Isaiah had heart surgery twice. In April 1999, he was hospitalized for five days and April 19 - the day before he died - was his first day back at school. He was on the wrestling team at one point and played cornerback for the school's football team in 1998, but quit because of racial intimidation.

His friends called him "Bushwick" and said he was small in stature, but big in heart. His parents couldn't handle coming to the graduation ceremony that took place on May 23, 1999, but they were given his cap and gown, which they buried with him.

Isaiah Shoels' Funeral

Isaiah was the last to be buried, and his funeral was held on April 29, 1999 at Heritage Christian Center, where Martin Luther King III gave a speech. He is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

January 17, 1981-April 20, 1999

Born two months premature, Lauren had a 4.0 GPA and was slated to be the school's valedictorian. She was captain (#8) of the girls varsity volleyball team, which her mother coached. At just six years old, she was already entertaining people with songs and dancing, and her favorite routine was about "Georgy Porgy" getting lost in the "Merry Woods." The "Merry Woods" were where people went to get married.

How she died

Lauren was in the library under table #2 on the opposite side from Kelly Fleming when she was shot and killed. Lauren is survived by her two brothers, Matt and Josh.

Life details

Lauren volunteered her time at a local animal shelter, and was planning on majoring in biology at Colorado State University. She loved nature and had dreams of working as a nature conservationist. Her oldest brother was a wildlife biologist, and they had a lot in common.

She was an avid Disney movie fan and had a large collection. Her favorites were Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid.

Lauren played the piano and the clarinet, loved reading Shakespeare, and was an extremely talented sketch artist. Of course, she sketched Disney characters and Christian themed designs. By the time she died, she had sketched her ideal wedding dress and an unfinished drawing of an angel.

She let her big sister dress her up and loved every minute. Lauren and her sister and their friends would put on fashion shows for her brothers, neighbors, and parents. She loved reading and her older brother would play "teacher" and she loved learning from him.

Lauren was extremely supportive of her siblings and went to all their sports games. She played volleyball for Columbine High School and on a competitive team with a local club. She played varsity for three years, lettering for two of those years, and was named co-captain senior year. She was also selected for the second Team All Conference.

She had two dogs, one rabbit, some gerbils, hamsters, a baby chick, and some fish. She was known to catch and release spiders, traveled to Puerto Rico on a family trip in 1998, and learned to scuba dive. During Spring break 1999, she went to Europe to visit Scotland and England with her A.P. English class. She was also enrolled in A.P. Calculus and Biology.

Lauren was academically-inclined, and before her death, she had received two scholarships to Colorado State University. She had received President Clinton's Award for Education Excellence, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She also volunteered her time at a soup kitchen.

Lauren was with her friends, Lisa Kreutz and Valeen Schnurr during the shooting. Both her friends were wounded, but survived. At graduation, her mother, Dawn Anna, received Lauren's diploma.

Lauren Townsend's Funeral

Lauren's funeral was held at Foothills Bible Church on April 26, 1999, where her brother Josh played a tribute video filled with happy memories from her life. Some of the videos included her laughing, learning to walk, hugging a whale, and silly home videos she made with her siblings. One silly video featured a plot that the entirety of civilization depended on their ability to make a sandwich. Just like Rachel Scott, Lauren's casket was plain white to allow people to write loving messages. Her father wrote:, “Lulu, you’ll always be my baby.” She as buried with neon green and blue polka dotted ribbons brought to her funeral by her volleyball teammates.

Lauren is buried in Littleton Cemetery in Littleton, Colorado. Upon her gravestone is inscripted, "Angel Daughter Sister Friend."

Matt Kechter

Matt Joseph Kechter

February 19, 1983-April 20, 1999

Weighing in at 210 pounds, Matt played offense and defense for Columbine High School's junior varsity football team. He loved weight lifting and had a contagious laugh. Matt was an A-student and was good friends with Greg Barnes, the young man who committed suicide in his garage shortly after the shooting after having been in the room with Dave Sanders during the incident.

“When I heard he was one of the ones from the library, it only made sense. He was always in the library studying. He always put academics first. He had straight A’s but he would never brag about it. I kinda looked up to him because of it. He was never in a bad mood, he was consistently happy. He was always talking about his family. Matt always waited for his little brother to come home from school by the mailbox out in front of his house. He was just that kind of guy." - Greg Barnes

It was Dylan Klebold who saved her performance by connecting another tape deck.

How she died

Rachel was eating lunch with Richard Castaldo, sitting off to the side next to the building at the top of the stairs by the West entrance, near the library emergency exit, when she was shot and killed. Richard was injured and survived.

Although it's been reported that if she hadn't quit smoking, she would have been in the smoker's pit when the shooting began and may have survived, witness Jennifer Smull placed her in the smoking pit with Eric Harris just before the shooting started.
